Carle Place Middle School student Gianna Marasco always knew she was good at spelling. When her school spelling bee rolled around, she found out just how good she was.
“I knew I would make it pretty far, but I didn’t expect to make it to the semifinals,” the seventh grader said. “It’s very exciting.”
On Feb. 9, Marasco will join fourth through eighth graders from all over Nassau and Suffolk counties for the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee. The winner of the Bee will go on to represent the region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. later this spring. The semifinals consist of a written test, oral test and then the final bee, and Marasco has been busy studying for the upcoming competition.
“I’ve been studying about 10 words every night,” she said.
She says she has enjoyed learning new words from different origins and countries. While she doesn’t have a favorite word, she says she does enjoy learning new vocabulary for English class and for when she speaks to people.
Besides being an expert speller, Marasco is also an avid reader and plays soccer on two teams.
Haley Meyrowitz will serve as Marasco’s alternate.
