Students from Powells Lane again won the Stock Market game, sponsored by The Association of Security Dealers. Pupils from Iraida Bodre’s fifth grade dual language class under the direction of Pat Yula won both the fall and spring Stock Market Games. As a result of the students winning, they went to Molloy College and joined with teams from other school districts to present their winning strategies as well as to receive individual medals, certificates and a banner for their schools.
Participating teams from many Long Island schools receive $100,000 in play money to construct their own portfolios. The game runs for a period of ten weeks during the fall and spring seasons. The following students came in first place in the fall and the spring games: Dennys Amaya, Melanie Bravo, Erick Cruz, Nakyah Dockery, Ana Escamilla, Junior Mercado Ponce, and Brian Ponce.
The Stock Market Game is the centerpiece of a Financial Success Curriculum developed by Yula. The main tenants of this curriculum stress the importance of earning money, spending it wisely, saving a portion of those earnings, and ultimately investing those savings for the long term.
“The students who participate in the games learn how to work in a team. Together they conduct research, interpret and evaluate their findings and come to agreements on investment choices. These skills will prove to be essential in many areas of life,” Bodre said.
