Westbury Salutatorian: Christian T. Dalusong

Christian Dalusong says being salutatorian wasn’t something he was aiming for, it just happened to come by.

“It feels pretty nice, and I’m honored,” Dalusong said of the accomplishment.

In the fall, he plans on attending Stony Brook University, where he will pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.

“I want to be involved in the medical field, but I’m more of a builder than a doctor. I’d like to come up with new ways to detect and treat diseases earlier than what they are now,” Dalusong said.

He was an active member in several clubs at Westbury High School, including jazz band, chess club, AV club, Mathletes and was team captain for Quiz Bowl.  He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and served as vice president for the Tri-M Music Honor Society.  Dalusong also volunteered as a mentor/tutor to elementary students through MPowering Kids.

He says that his biggest influencers were his parents and notes that education was very important in his family.

“My family valued education over everything else,” Dalusong said. ”Our belief is that without a great education, you’ll go nowhere in life. We need education and knowledge about the world to survive.”

He says his mom pushed him to do everything on time and study hard, and his dad was always sharing knowledge and helping Dalusong discover and try new things. Dalusong also credits his success to his aunt, who died from lung cancer.

“She always reminded me to stay focused and motivated and that whatever dreams I had, as long as I work hard enough I could accomplish it,” he said.

Dalusong came to the district five years ago, after growing up in the Philippines. He says that adjusting to a new school in a new country wasn’t that hard because people are so friendly.

“When I came in, I was the quiet kid. The people here were friendly enough to approach me and help me break out of my shell. They helped me adjust pretty easily,” Dalusong said.

He says that the highlight of his high school career has been the friends he has made.

“I’m going to miss all the amazing people in my class and school in general. I’ll miss having a close group of people with me, and the familiarity of high school in general,” Dalusong said. “I had a really amazing time at Westbury High School and my experiences there could not be traded for anything else. I will cherish those memories for the rest of my life.”
