The W. T. Clarke Middle School drama club is currently preparing for its musical, a rendition on the classic story, the Princess and the Pea. The musical is based loosely on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, which was adapted for the stage in 1959 with the name “Once Upon a Mattress.” The Clarke Middle School version will feature new characters, upbeat music and a surprise twist.
“I personally enjoy the show very much. It’s very funny, and gives a wide variety of roles for my students,” director and musical director Douglas Castillo said.
With a variety of characters, including a tomboy princess, overbearing queen, silent king, jester and minstrel, the play allows the audience to travel back to medieval times. Technical director Anthony W. Duffy says that the set, which was built by a small crew of middle and high school students, also adds to the play’s authenticity.
“We tried to make it look like an authentic 1400s era castle. The sets are beyond middle school standard. It feels like a real environment, and helps establish background,” Duffy said.
With lots of jazzy numbers that are great to tap your foot along to, this up-tempo comedy is great for the whole family.
“This play is hilarious. It’s so much fun and it’s very lighthearted. There are a lot of funny little innuendos and things that are very topical, and there’s also a lot of cheerful silliness for ids. Anyone of any age is going to enjoy it,” Duffy said.
The play is April 12 and 13 at 7 p.m.
