On Father’s Day, June 20, the Westbury Little League Senior Division 15- and 16-year-old team played in the Senior Division Championship game at East Meadow’s baseball complex on Merrick Avenue to a crowd of cheering fans. In an exciting and close game, Westbury defeated Plainview 7-6 in a fierce battle culminating with a walk-off single by Billy Casseus in the bottom of the 7th inning, giving Westbury the Championship against a strong Plainview team. Westbury and Plainview both won their playoff games on June 19, which brought them into the Championship game.
Westbury played from behind before tying the game in the bottom of the 6th inning when, down two runs, they started the inning with two walks followed by a sacrifice bunt by Brian Waldhof moving runners to second and third with Brandon Percival singling to center to score the fifth run and then an infield single hit by Andy Sanchez to bring in the tying run. Plainview went down 1-2-3 in their half of the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Westbury’s Mujica and Percival walked and then moved to third and second bases when Casseus came up with one out and drove a single up the middle for the winning run to score on a walk-off hit. Trey Mujica started the game for Westbury with Billy Casseus entering in the 6th and going on to get the win. Coach Ralph Davis told the team following the game, “The win was a total effort with everyone contributing and executing when the time came for key hits and plays.”
Congratulations Westbury Seniors on your Championship season and making this a special Father’s Day for coaches Ralph Davis, Lou Mujica and the rest of the fathers in attendance.
