Two Carle Place Athletes Advance to Track and Field State Championships

During the weekend of June 12, Carle Place athletes Nicole Scicolone and Joanna Koronios competed in the New York State Track and Field Championship in Vestal, NY. Koronios, a junior captain, qualified to compete in the discus. On her second throw of the day, Koronios broke her own school record and clinched the gold for Division II schools with a 141’ throw, leaving all other competitors at least 20’ behind her. The next day, competing in Federations, Koronios placed 3rd in all of the state which moved her to be ranked 66th in the nation. She will conclude her season competing in Nationals in North Carolina.

Scicolone, a senior captain, qualified for two events this year. She competed in the 400m race and the long jump. Scicolone had an amazing season, wining MVP without any reservations. Scicolone’s best long jump of the season and new school record was 17’4”. Her best 400m of the season was 61.3 seconds, which is also a new school record. Scicolone will continue her track and field career at Sacred Heart University next year.  She will be greatly missed, but will be a tremendous asset to her new team.
