Westbury Okinawan Karate, which just completed its sixth year in partnership with the Westbury Recreation Department, had its 4th Annual Board Breaking Night on May 10.
Students from 5 to over 50 years of age participated in the event with the thickness of the boards varying with the age and size of the students. The students were allowed to break the boards with various strikes – punches, elbows, palm strikes, hammer fists, knee strikes and kicks. Although this is not part of the regular curriculum taught at the Westbury dojo, it adds some excitement and flavor to the program.
If you would like some information about the karate program taught at the Westbury Recreation Center, call Sensei John Power at 333-8489 or stop in at the Westbury Recreation Center any Monday or Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
