Westbury High School hosted the Nassau County Track Coaches Association’s 42nd Annual Invitational on April 24. There were many outstanding performances from both the Westbury boys and girls track team. Junior Owen Skeete was named ‘Outstanding Male Performer’ by winning the 1600M (4:24.7) and the 3200M (9:33.8). He set his personal record in both events.
Rashan Whethers impressed the crowd by placing second in the pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches). In addition, Darnelle Mickens won first place in the 200M (21.7) while placing 2nd in the 100M dash in a photo-finish (10.7). Meanwhile, in the field events, junior Hugh O’Brien won first place in the discus by throwing his personal best (148 feet, 11 inches). Jair Edwards won the long jump (21 feet 11.5 inches) and placed second in the triple jump (43’ 3.25”).
Westbury’s sophomore boys relay team won 4x100M (46.7) while the freshman/sophomore relay team showed great teamwork in a victory in the 4x400M (3:51.4). The 4x400M varsity team placed second while running their season’s best (3:22.6).
Tiara Mitchell received second place medals in both the 400M intermediate hurdles (1:13.1) and the triple jump (35 feet, 2.5 inches). Freshman Jasmine Hawkins recorded her season’s best in the pole vault (6 feet) to become Westbury’s first female pole vaulter to ever clear this height.
Additionally, Ashley Boylan placed third in two sophomore events – high jump (4 feet, 6 inches) and long jump (14 feet, 1.5 inches) while Lynda Nicholson won the freshman/sophomore shot put (31 feet, 1.75 inches) and Shelly-Ann Baugh received a third place medal in the discus (96’feet, 7 inches).
The Westbury girls relay teams ended the day by winning the 4x100M freshman (54.2), the 4x400M freshman/sophomore (4:42.0) and the 4x400M varsity (4:25.6).
