According to the World Food Program, more than one billion people are malnourished and more than 5 million children die from hunger-related causes each year.
For the past 30 years, “Stop World Hunger” has been sponsoring a variety of tennis programs to increase awareness, raise funds for famine relief and collect food for hungry people across Long Island.
First up for 2010 will be a tennis party on Saturday evening, March 20 at Carefree Racquet Club in North Merrick. For $15, players will be guaranteed two hours of playing time and light refreshments. Canned goods will be collected for a local food pantry.
Next will be the annual “Stop World Hunger” Spring tennis Tournament, recreational tournaments with divisions for intermediate, advanced intermediate and advanced players. Events consist of singles for men, women and seniors (60+) as well as doubles for men, women and mixed teams.
Matches are scheduled by the participants at mutually convenient times and sites. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles.
Tournament format consists of round-robin, no elimination play. All matches must be played between April 3 and June 13, 2010. The registration deadline is March 20.
