On Dec. 14, Westbury Okinawan Karate, which is offered by the Westbury Recreation Department, had a formal Testing and Reception Party. At this time, 28 students who met the attendance requirements and proficiency of the skills required were tested. Additionally, the four students tested for Black Belt on Dec. 12 also received their belts.
The following students passed their test and were advanced to the next belt level:
Dragon Team (Ages 6 to 9)
Shodan Jr. Black Belt – Victor Perez
3rd Kyu: Green Belt w/Stripe - Bryan Villafuerte and Nazyer Jackson
5th Kyu: Blue Belt - Christina Bonaparte and Tyler Bonaparte
6th Kyu: Orange Belt – Claudia Perez
8th Kyu: Gold Belt - Isabella Escorza and James Claudio
9th Kyu: Purple Belt – Leslie Villafuerte, Gregory Jarvis and Anali Suarez
Ninja Team (Ages 9 to 11
Sandan Jr. Black belt (3rd degree) – Viron Jones
Nidan Jr. Black Belt (2nd degree) – Matthew Libby and Dwayne Depusoir
1st Kyu: Brown Belt w/Stripe – Alvin Campos
3rd Kyu: Green Belt w/Stripe - Sienna Richardson and Kiarra Richardson
6th Kyu: Orange Belt – Gabrielle Brathwaite
8th Kyu: Gold Belt – Jael Ferguson. Joseph Ferguson and Wilbur Claudio
9th Kyu: Purple Belt – Gerber Claudio, Lidia Claudio, Melvin Whitehead and Joshua Almonte
Eagle Team (Ages 12 to Adult )
5th Kyu: Blue Belt - Jonathan Cardoza
6th Kyu: Orange Belt – Brandon Brathwaite
9th Kyu: Purple Belt – Karthik Maniam
Following the test, the dojo held its traditional holiday party. Pizza, soda and snacks were enjoyed by all of the students and their families. Sensei John Power 4th Dan raffled off some karate items for some of the lucky students.
This year marks the fifth anniversary of Westbury Okinawan Karate and its association with the Westbury Recreation Department. The school, coordinated by Sensei Power, a continuous program that eventually leads to Black Belt and beyond. The school accepts children 6 years to adult. New students are always welcome and there is continuous enrollment every Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
