On the chilly evening of Nov. 7, the Westbury Wolverines arrived at another victory when they took on the Harlem Jets. The Jets, however, did not go down without a fight. There was a spark within their team’s heart that screamed “we have a chance to finally beat the undefeated Wolverines.”
Neither team scored in the first half and both defenses were worthy of honorable mention. The Harlem Jets’ spark soon turned into a flame. The excitement grew as the Jets pushed on defending their goal, trying with all of their might and determination to score against the Wolverines. Westbury, however, extinguished their flame in the second half when the offense became too fluid for the opposition.
The Wolverines offense poured through with two touchdowns piercing the Jets’ defensive line. Westbury’s running back sprinted around the left untouched for 21 yards into the end zone. The quarterback faked a handoff and sprinted through the same open area on the left end for the second score of the game – a very clever offensive strategy on Wolverines’ behalf.
The Wolverines Cheerleading and Dance team performed flawlessly during halftime, encouraging the players from the sidelines throughout the entire game as they cheered, “Push ‘em back! Push ‘em back! Wolverines, push ‘em waaaaay back!” And that is exactly what the Wolverines did!
The Westbury Wolverines were a force to be reckoned with. In addition to finishing undefeated (7-0), no team scored against them in any of their games.
Both defense and offensive lines are cohesive and the spirit of community is clearly recognizable.
The Wolverines, an AYF/Big Apple League Football team, is now in playoff season! They will play their next game Saturday, Nov. 21 and are revving up to compete in the National AYF Championship in Florida in December.
