Congratulations to the Westbury boys varsity basketball team who defeated East Meadow High Schoool 57 to 51 to win the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.
The tournament was dedicated to Coach Martin “Bunky” Reid and the 1985 state championship team. Before the finals of the tournament, a poster signed by many of the players from the 85’ team was presented to Mrs. Reid to honor her son.
In the opening round game against Herricks, Westbury’s Shakel Cafield scored a career high 31 points including 7 three pointers to lead Westbury to a 70 to 47 win. Brian Newell chipped in with 13 points and 15 rebounds. In the championship game, the green Dragons were led by Jonathan Dean who scored 18 points and Cafield who scored 16 points. Brian Newell chipped in with 10 rebounds and Jerome Cunningham added 8 points. Westbury outscored East Meadow 22 to 14 to earn the come from behind win. Congratulations on the victory.
The tournament raised $5,000 in donations toward in the fight against cancer and helped create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
