The Carle Place boys’ varsity soccer team made school history on Nov. 17, when they captured the NYS Class B championship title. It ended a long journey during which the team never lost a game. Carle Place was the only team in the state to go undefeated — and that includes all classifications. The final statistics were an impressive 18 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie; 56 goals for, 6 against, and 14 shutouts.
After going 11-0 in conference play, the team earned a “bye” to the Nassau County Class B final vs. Wheatley. The team repeated as county champions after a 3-2 win. The next step was the Long Island final versus Mattituck. It was a very exciting game, with Mattituck the toughest opponent the team would face all season. CP prevailed after a double overtime goal from senior Billy Chiappone with only 3 minutes 32 seconds left in the final overtime.
The team advanced to the regional game versus Rhinebeck from Section 9. In another thriller, the team would move on to the NYS Final Four after another double overtime goal, this time from senior back Nick Hytell with only 10 seconds remaining in the final overtime. One of the team’s goals for the season was to reach the NYS Final Four, but after reaching that goal, the team had even higher aspirations.
In the NYS semi-final, the team faced number one ranked Ichabod Crane (IC) from Section 2, the defending NYS champion. CP dominated the match, with a final score of 3-1. In the NYS Championship match, the team faced Westhill from Section 3. In another dominating performance, CP accomplished the ultimate award, NYS champions after a 3-0 win. Dylan Klein led the offense with 2 goals and 1 assist. Defender Matt Carr anchored the back line and keeper John Guzzo earned his 14th shutout of the season.
