On Saturday, Sept. 28, 42 Green Dragons suited up for their second home game of the season, versus Calhoun High School. This was the largest varsity roster fielded by Westbury in at least the past 12 years, a tribute to Westbury Head Coach Savalis Charles’ recruiting efforts.
The initial game plan was to pound the ball on the ground with a triumvirate running attack. Sophomore tailback Shalique Merchant (#6) led Westbury with 250 yards and three touchdowns. His runs included both tough tackle-breaking runs up the middle as well as long runs in which his breakaway speed led to scores. Senior running back Shyquan Sanders (#8) rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Sanders also hauled in an interception while on defense.
The third piece of the running attack was by the quarterbacks Raeco Jackson (#5) and Anthony Preston (#12). Jackson ran for one touchdown and completed two of his three passing attempts for 75 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown to tight end David Demesyeux (#45). The Westbury offensive line—consisting of tight ends Demesyeux and Hakiem Francis (#87) plus the five starting lineman: Herfy Jodesty (#65), Shamar Muir (#75) on the left, center Malcolm Funchess (#68), Mario Cruz-Ortez (#52) and Richard Skervin (#64) on the right—consistently drove Calhoun backward throughout the day. The Westbury defense was led by outside linebacker De-Angelo Bien-Aise (#9), who intercepted two Calhoun passes.
Congratulations to all the Green Dragons and their Coaches: Savalis Charles, Todd Goodwin, Lamont Burns, and Kevin Bedard. The Green Dragons’ next home games are Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. versus Mepham and Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. versus Bellmore/JFK.
