In their 2009 season opener, the 8-year-old Chiefs continued their winning ways from last season and beat the Franklin Square Warriors 33-6.
The Chiefs offense, led by quarterback Michael O’Connell (4 for 4 passing), had a fantastic day and were able to move the ball because of the great blocking by the offensive line centered by Michael LaGinestra and anchored by Patrick McTiernan, Matty O’Connell, Anthony Giunta, Philip Arnold, Dylan Vincenti and Spenser Warantz. Key runs and catches by running backs Lance Costa, Matthew Sluka, Thomas Albig, Jason Eccher and Jack Duff helped the Chiefs offense control the ball throughout the game.
The Chiefs defense was intense, making gang tackles all over the field. The defensive line of Joe Martello, Kevin Parente, Michael Sinisi, Zach Olson, Chris Marshiano and Andrew Cho kept the pressure on Franklin Square’s offense the whole day. Linebackers O’Connell and Sluka attacked the ball and finished the job while cornerbacks and safeties Andrew Casoria, Matt Grimm, Jeremy Samuel and Ryan Calderone were fearless.
All the boys played and participated in the victory, displaying great sportsmanship along the way.
Scoring is summarized as follows:
• Thomas Albig: 11-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)
• Lance Costa: 48-yard touchdown run (Jason Eccher xpoint run)
• Jack Duff: 4-yard touchdown run (Michael O’Connell xpoint pass to Matt Sluka)
• Michael O’Connell: 50-yard touchdown run (Andrew Casoria xpoint run); 16-yard touchdown pass to Matt Sluka (xpoint failed)
