Port Rowing Holds 2nd Annual Ergathon

Team raised funds through event and donated $10,000 to Hurricane Sandy victims

On Dec. 7, Port Rowing held their 2nd Annual Ergathon. The team broke into groups and rowed a combined distance of 1,000,000 meters in 7 hours and 25 minutes. This is equivalent to rowing across New York and back again (630 miles).

The team started at 4:30 p.m., Friday afternoon, at the Indoor Rowing Center and in traditional Port Rowing fashion, encouraged and pushed each other on the rowing machines until just before midnight. Over the course of the evening, parents joined the adult team to help the kids, and there was a coach team, as well. It was a complete team effort on every level. This year, the team put others’ needs before their own and donated $10,000 of the money they raised to Hurricane Sandy victims via Newsday’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.

Port Rowing is a local nonprofit organization that promotes rowing to all youths in grades 7-12, adults, and also to adaptive rowers. The organization is based in Port Washington, but as an open club, it accepts members from any zip code. They are currently beginning their winter training season and spots are still open in all of the programs. If your child wants to get fit, have fun, and learn to row, there is a program for you. If you are an adult looking for a low impact total body conditioning activity for the winter, there are classes for you. If you want your child to take part in our adaptive program and partner with a Port Rowing mentor, there is a program for you.
