Westbury Okinawan Karate, which is offered by the Westbury Recreation Department, had its formal August Testing and Pizza Party on Monday, Aug. 27. Fourteen students who met the attendance requirements and proficiency of the skills were tested. The following students passed their test and were advanced to the next belt level:
Jr. YanDan Blackbelt – Black with blue stripe – Kiarra Richardson
Jr. SanDan Blackbelt – Black with orange stripe – Alvin Campos
Jr. NiDan Blackbelt – Black with yellow stripe – Christina and Tyler Bonaparte
4th Kyu – Green Belt – Maxwell Brown
6th Kyu – Orange Belt – James Alexandro and Billy Sargent
7th Kyu - Gold Belt with stripe – Natalie Escorza and Alex Monereau
8th Kyu – Gold Belt – Davide Scalese, Christian Castro, Gabby Destra and Haziel Richardson
9th Kyu – Purple Belt – Julian Pearson
Following the test, the dojo had its pizza party reception. Sensei John Power had blackbelts from his former dojo on hand to witness and assist with the testing.
The Westbury Okinawan Karate School (dojo), has been working with the Westbury Recreation Department to bring a traditional Okinawan style of karate to the village. The program, coordinated by Sensei John Power 4th Dan is in its ninth year. The Westbury dojo runs a continuous program that eventually leads to blackbelt and beyond. The school accepts children 6 years of age up to adults.
