The SUNY College at Old Westbury junior outfielder Paul Valerio was named Honorable Mention Hitter by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the week of March 5-11. Earlier last week, the Merrick native was named ECAC Metro Region and Skyline Conference Player of the Week.
Valerio opened the week with three hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases against No. 2 Kean. He followed with five hits in seven trips to the plate in a doubleheader sweep over Yeshiva including three triples, six RBI, seven runs scored and five stolen bases. Against CCNY he went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and closed out the week extending his hit streak to 13 as the Panthers swept New Paltz. Valerio registered a .528 batting average (11-21) to go with three triples, 12 runs scored, seven RBI and 12 stolen bases last week. On the season, he is hitting .449 (22-49) with a .612 slugging percentage with 19 runs scored, 10 RBI and 22 thefts on the base path in 25 attempts. Against New Paltz, his seven-game run scoring and his six-game stolen base streaks came to an end.
