Westbury High School Varsity Teams Excelling On and Off Fields

On June 16 in the Westbury High School Auditorium during the commendations component of the Westbury Board of Education Meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Constance Clark-Snead recognized two Westbury High School spring season teams that earned the prestigious New York State Scholar/Athlete Team Award: the Westbury varsity girls badminton team and the Westbury varsity girls softball team.

This is the fourth year in a row that the varsity badminton team has won the NYS Scholar/Athlete Team Award. Westbury High School physical education teacher Michelle O’Donovan coached the team for all four years. A team must compile a cumulative team grade point average during their sport season of 90 or above to qualify for the award, which is given out by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). Peter Degere, who taught physical education at the Drexel Avenue School, was the coach of the softball team. The NYSPHAA issues a certificate to the school and gold enameled Scholar/Athlete pins to the members of the team. Mr. Doric Capsis, Westbury UFSD Director of Athletics presented the pins and certificates to these two teams.

The Westbury varsity boys spring track team was recognized by Mr. Capsis and Dr. Clark-Snead for winning the Class AA Spring Track County Championship. The boys also won their Division Championship and won the esteemed Eastern’s Invitational track meet which was held in New Rochelle, NY.  Head coach, Donald Ross and assistant coach, Darin Harrison, led the boys. The point-scoring leader of the boys track team was senior Owen Skeete. Owen, who was named Newsday Runner of the Year,” dominated all of the distance events throughout the season. He will be continuing his track career in college at the Division I level.  Owen will be running for Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. next fall.

Westbury Board of Education trustee Ms. Leslie F. Davis and Westbury Assistant Superintendents Mr. Robert Brisbane, Mrs. Mary Lagnado, and Dr. Marjorie Toran offered their congratulations to the three teams for their achievements during the recognition ceremonies.
