Carle Place Girls V Softball Team Makes History

History has been made at Carle Place High School with three consecutive Class B County Championships for the Girls Varsity Softball Team.

“At the beginning of the season, I would not have pictured such a successful season – Conference II Champions, County Champions and Long Island Champions,” said Chris Ceruti, coach and director of athletics, physical education, health and family and consumer sciences for Carle Place Schools.

This year’s team included seniors Mallory Mitchell (co-captain) and Joanne Barilla, juniors Jessica Lewis, Jessica Bruckner, Jennifer Paffmann, Amanda Rivera and Alison Laga, sophomores Stephanie Mattondo and Dana McLaughlin (co-captain) and freshmen Ashley Cole, Victoria Hytell and Leanne Iannucci along with late additions Alice Curran and Amanda Machado.

According to Ceruti, this season’s success was a true team effort. “These ladies worked hard, stayed positive and kept a smile on their faces,” she said.

Some of the highlights for the 2009 season included a team that had 639 at bats, 134 hits, 106 singles, 19 doubles, 8 triples, 1 homerun, 64 RBIs, 16 stolen bases, 172 total bases, 508 putouts, 175 assists and a .961 fielding average.

Pitcher Ashley Cole had a 708 winning percentage on the mound. Her impressive stats include 173 innings pitches, 221 strikeouts, 107 hits and only 18 walks with an ERA of .93.

Congratulations to short stop Mallory Mitchell, Most Valuable Player; Ashley Cole, Rising Star; and catcher Leanne Iannucci, Clutch Player, for receiving All-County Honors. Tori Hytell at third base and Jessica Lewis at first base, who took home the Coaches Award, received All-Conference Honors. Left fielder Joanne Barilla received the Outstanding Effort Award along with All-Division Honors and the Scholar-Athlete Award at the Nassau County Softball Dinner.

The Lady Frogs were also the recipients of the 2009 Sportsmanship Award. “Of all awards this one means the most and has the most value,” Ceruti said. “It is one thing to be a great softball player but even better to be a great person as well. I know these young ladies feel the same way I do, proud to put on a Carle Place uniform.”

The Carle Place High School Girls Varsity Softball Team has won the Nassau County Class B Championships seven times in the last 10 years (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009); they have also been named Long Island Class B Champions three times in the last five years (2005, 2007 and 2009).
