Continuing the administration’s tradition of acknowledging North Hempstead residents for outstanding accomplishments and contributions, Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Councilman Angelo P Ferrara, and North Hempstead Elected Officials paid tribute recently to a New Hyde Park girl’s softball team who went undefeated for 17 games on their journey to becoming the first ever in the 9-10 age group, boys or girls, to win the Eastern Regional Championship.
“Many in our Town have done special things,” Supervisor Kaiman said in his remarks in the Board Room ceremony. “Today, we have in the New Hyde Park Little League All Stars a team of girls who have accomplished the seemingly impossible. We are truly proud of all of you, your families and your coaches.”
In the State Championships playoffs in Fredonia, New York, the team went 4-0 in the first round, 3-0 in the second round against teams from the Five Boroughs and Nassau, and 4-0 to win the State Championships. They went 6-0 on the road to winning the Eastern Regional Championships.
“For New Hyde Park Little League, it’s a very big deal,” said Tom Donnelly, manager of the 12-member squad. “We are only the second New Hyde Park Little League girls team to win the state tournament and the first ever girls team to become Eastern Regional Champions.”
Were this team a year older, they would have qualified for the Little League World Series, Donnelly said. “That’s our goal two seasons out.”
