Westbury Okinawan Karate August Testing and Reception

On Aug. 23, Westbury Okinawan Karate, which is offered by the Westbury Recreation Department, had a formal Testing and Reception Party. Sixteen students that met the attendance requirements and proficiency of the skills that are required were tested. The following students passed their test and were advanced to the next belt level:

Dragon Team - (6-to 9-year-olds)

4th Kyu – Green Belt – Cristina Bonaparte and Tyler Bonaparte

5th Kyu – Blue Belt - James Claudio

6th Kyu –Orange Belt - Isabella Escorza

8th Kyu – Gold Belt – Davesh Valagolam, Indraneel Vaka and Julian Saavedra

Ninja Team – (9-to 12-year-olds)

1st Kyu – Brown Belt w/stripe - Sienna Richardson and Kiarra Richardson

5th Kyu –  Blue Belt – Wilber Claudio

6th Kyu – Orange Belt - Gerber Claudio and Lidia Claudio

Eagle Team - (teen and adult)

1st Kyu – Brown Belt w/stripe – Dexter Golbourne

6th Kyu –Orange Belt – Karthik Maniam

8th Kyu – Gold Belt – James Drakulis

Jr. Blackbelt – NiDan – Steven Alexander

Following the test, the dojo had its traditional reception party. Pizza, soda and snacks were enjoyed by all of the students and their families.

This year marks the 6th anniversary of Westbury Okinawan Karate and its association with the Westbury Recreation Department. The program was started to bring a traditional Okinawan style of karate to the village. The program, coordinated by Sensei John Power 4th Dan runs a continuous program that eventually leads to black belt and beyond. The school accepts children 6 years of age up to adults. At the end of October, the highest ranking Shidokan Master in the North America will be visiting the Long Island Shidokan dojos from his home base in Michigan. On Saturday, Oct. 30, Seikichi Iha 10th Dan will be holding classes in the Village Sports Center and a Friendship Reception at the Recreation Center. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet and train with the Master.
