Westbury High School will host the 42nd annual Nassau County Track Coaches Association Meet on Saturday, April 24. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and some 40 schools from Nassau, Suffolk and New York City are expected to participate in the invitational. All proceeds from concessions during the meet will go to benefit Westbury School District organizations, including PTSA, NJROTC and the high school track program, among others. The teams spent the winter meeting for game night playing board games from Twister, Monopoly and Operation to Life, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune to stay in communiqué during off season time and the Wolverines sports-loving teams hosted its first awards dinner visited by Nassau County District Court Judge Tricia Farrell and Nassau County Legislator Robert Troiano, to name a few of the invited guests.
“It’s not too late to register for spring time sports programs offered by the Nassau County Police Activity League,” said Officer Darlene Capobianco, head of the Westbury/Carle Place Unit. The Westbury PAL will continue registering residents for spring sports fun at the Westbury Middle School located at 455 Rockland Street for a nominal fee.
The indoor and outdoor sporting activities including basketball, flag football, judo, karate, soccer, track, tennis and volleyball, begin this month but it’s never too late to get the kids off the couch and onto the field for the health of it! Kids will have loads of fun making new friends while enjoying physical activity through organized competitive sport. Swimming, lacrosse, fencing and bowling are coming soon.
W.T. Clarke Middle and High School’s Run With the Rams, a 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run through the streets of Salisbury, will take place Saturday, April 17 (rain or shine).
Both events will begin at Clarke, which is located in 740 Edgewood Drive in Westbury, will take participants through the suburban streets of Salisbury. The Fun Run will start at 8:30 a.m. with the 5K scheduled for 9 a.m. with number pick-up and in-person registration from 7:15 a.m. in the school gymnasium.
The miniature-golf course at Eisenhower Park opened the week of March 29 for the 2010 season.
The facility, one of Nassau County’s most popular mini-golf courses, features two 18-hole courses (“Mountainside” and “Overlook”) with terraced landscaping that incorporates a waterfall, small ponds, flower beds and a number of challenging holes.
The course is wheelchair and baby-stroller accessible and includes two gazebos with picnic tables that are available for children’s parties.
During early spring, the course is open daily from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fees are $7 for adults and $4 for children and seniors for one 18-hole round. For additional information about mini-golf, call 572-0407.

Thomas O’Connell of Carle Place, a Bunky Reid All-Star coached by Michael Jackson, recreation supervisor of the Village of Westbury, was selected to the 2010 All NYC Metro Team.
The team consists of the top 25 seventh-and eighth-graders from New York and New Jersey to play in the 2010 All NYC Metro JHS Classic, which was played at the Izod Center in New Jersey, the home of the New Jersey Nets.
The Carle Place High School varsity softball program continues to represent the school and Nassau County with distinction. Sophomore Ashley Cole received All-State Honors by the New York State Sportswriters Association for her success on the mound.
Mark your calendar now for an inspirational day: Sunday, May 16. That’s when thousands of women and those who love them most will gather at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh for “Every Woman Matters: A Walk for Women and Their Families.” Proceeds from the 5K walk, to take place along the boardwalk in celebration of women’s health and wellness, will benefit the new Katz Women’s Hospital and Women’s Health Institute of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
Assemblyman Tom McKevitt honored New York’s Special Olympic athletes at a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Special Olympics New York (SONY). The event highlighted SONY’s mission statement of providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with developmental disabilities while giving them continuing opportunities to improve physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
