Letter: TNH Supervisor Proud of Great Neck Storm Response

Devastation reigned in the wake of the recent tornado-like event that recently struck the Great Neck peninsula. The June 24 storm, or “micro-burst” as the National Weather Service declared it, lasted only a matter of minutes but the havoc it caused will be with us for a long time to come.

As North Hempstead Town Supervisor, I was proud of the manner by which our community responded to this event. Our residents remained calm; our volunteer fireman and our police jumped into action; our public officials coordinated with one another; and our county, town, village and district municipal employees did the work that saved the day. Tree by tree, limb by limb, the debris was removed, the roads opened, and our communities made passable and safe.

LIPA was amazing in getting wires cleared and power restored; neighboring municipalities sent help; and our state and federal officials were at the ready to help when needed.

On behalf of the Town of North Hempstead I thank all who responded in one way or another during this crisis. Whether helping a neighbor or working 24 hours straight clearing debris we all came together and made a difference. Thank you.

Supervisor Jon Kaiman
