Spread the Word to End the Word

The Special Olympics, Best Buddies International and other organizations are encouraging people to spread the word to stop using the “R-word.” According to the Special Olympics and Best Buddies International, they are working to “raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word “retard(ed)” and encourage people to pledge to stop using the R-word.” This campaign was started by members of colleges and high schools in order to rally their schools and communities to pledge to stop using the R-word.

Spread the Word to End the Word is encouraging people to come together and pledge their support at www.r-word.org with the goal of reaching 100,000 pledges. The campaign was created in 2009 by youth with and without intellectual disabilities who participated in the Special Olympics Global Youth Activation Summit at the Special Olympics World Winter Games. March 3 is the second annual day of awareness, which will be centered on educating and bringing awareness to the positive influence “individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have in our communities and why the use of the R-word is hurtful, even in casual conversation.” For more information please visit http://www.special olympics.org/spread-the-word-to-end-the-word.aspx.

Assemblyman Tom McKevitt encourages people to pledge their support at www.r-word.org and help “Spread the Word to End the Word.”
