As a 40-year-resident of Westbury, a former teacher in the Westbury Schools and an advocate for community collaboration and harmony, I am disappointed that our school board has demonstrated an unethical decision to hire Rocco Lanzilotta as district clerk and is unable to realize that conflicts will continue to develop.
This appointment represents the first time in our community’s long history that the school board has appointed one of its own members to a paying position working in the school district. The appointment appears to be as corrupt as it is historic!
Although over 20 applications were received in addition to Mr. Lanzilotta’s, not one of the applicants for the position of district clerk was interviewed. Although the position was filled satisfactorily for more than a decade by a part-time person at a salary of only $13,000, the board chose to expand it to a full time position paying $50,000 during one of the most fiscally challenging times in our country. I wonder why?
Could it be a political payback for the support Rocco Lanzilotta gave to Karin Campbell’s campaign for school board in June and her town council campaign in November? Last week, Mr. Lanzilotta voted along with Ms. Campbell, Stanton Brown and Larry Wornum to give Mr. Lanzilotta the $50,000 that he requested. Last month Mr. Lanzilotta told me that he would not vote for himself. Surprise, he did!
How long will this school board continue to make a mockery of Westbury? This political patronage has been going on for the last six months. It needs to stop now!
