Well, we finally finished another school board election with very little negative fanfare. The question that puzzles me is that this is supposed to be a non-paying position. If this is correct then why do we have all of the negative behaviors during recent elections. It is not surprising that none of the candidates are new to this arena. It was difficult to find anyone who would run for the school board. The reasons given for not running are that people do not want to risk having their names degraded or their personal lives exposed with lies and distortion of truths. It is a shame in this great community with concerned residents that not one person was willing to take that chance.
This community is becoming similar to a couple of other school districts in Nassau County that have deteriorated because a few people have taken over. It is time that we as citizens wake up. Westbury/New Cassel taxpayers are saddled with $150,000 attorney fees based on baseless lawsuits against the legally elected school board members. Many people have no idea of the damage that is being done to our community. I have been asked several times by non-residents “what kind of community do I live in?”
We read in the papers about some of our citizens being arrested. Who wants to buy a home in Westbury? These are our homes, which are our greatest investment besides our children. We should start protecting our investments, first by attending school board meetings as well as the village meetings. It was very refreshing to see Laura Pierce receive the majority of votes in this past school election. She led in all of the areas in the Westbury School District. It was unfortunate that this budget was not passed.
It appears that some of our residents are more aware of the issues in the schools and community and are not influenced by lies and distortions of true facts. We need to come out and work together and put aside our personal agendas for the good of our children.
