Obituary: Herbert H. Beardsley

Herbert H. Beardsley passed away at home on Jan. 26 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease after a full, happy and blessed life. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Carolyn, and children Nancy (Thomas) Lyon of North Babylon, NY, Ruth (Thomas) Beardsley Sansone of Bethany, CT, James (Karen) Beardsley of Chevy Chase, MD and Susan (Marcell) Easter of Charleston, SC, and grandchildren Victoria and Michael Lyon, Alexandra and Nicholas Beardsley, and Maxwell and George Easter.

He was born on July 14, 1929 and grew up in Flushing, Queens, son of Wilhelmina (“Minnie”) and Herbert H. Beardsley. He graduated from Columbia University and Philadelphia Divinity School. He spent his entire professional life as an Episcopal priest. He began his career as the curate of the Church of the Advent in Westbury, becoming the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Gulph Mills, PA and returning to Advent as rector in 1965, where he served for the next 30 years.

Upon his retirement, he and Carolyn moved to eastern Long Island, where he was an interim rector and supply priest to several parishes in Suffolk County for many years. He was actively engaged and well known in his communities as a member of or serving in volunteer capacities for numerous organizations.  More significantly, he will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who was loved and respected by all.

Services held at Church of the Redeemer, 13225 Sound Ave., Mattituck, NY. In lieu of flowers, anyone inclined to make a memorial donation is asked to give to Church of the Redeemer at the above address, or to East End Hospice,
