Vincent Julius Collins, a resident of Westbury for 56 years, passed away Feb. 15, 2011 in his 89th year. Vincent leaves behind four children, Roger Collins and his wife Pat, Vincent (Ricky) Collins and his wife Kay, Felicia Collins Correia and her husband Peter and Lance Collins and his wife Sousan, and his wife of 25 years Gertrude Alston and her two children, Craig Alston and his wife Jane and Cynthia Bohanon and her husband Timothy. He also leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren, Valerie Collins, Branden, Austin and Jordan Collins, Peter Correia, Ashley Collins and Angela and Brittany Bohanon. He is also survived by his nieces, Nadine and Norine and his grand- nephews, Curtis and Vernon Clay, and grand-niece, Nichole Cuffy.
Vincent pursued a career as a carpenter, cabinetmaker and furniture finisher. He was noted for his creativity which allowed him to reproduce full pieces of furniture from just a picture. He retired in 1991 at the age of 70.
Vincent spent his retirement years on the road visiting his children, babysitting, and taking yearly cruises with Gertrude, which he did until the end - his last trip returning Jan. 29 of this year. Vincent also discovered the rewards of volunteerism as an active member of the Kiwanis Club of New Cassel, and as a reliable poll monitor on election days. And even in retirement, he never stopped working on projects in the garage.
Visitation was held at Carl Burnett Funeral Home and Mass of Christian Burial on Feb. 22 at St. Brigid’s Church. Interment at Holy Rood Cemetery.
Donations in honor of Vincent Collins can be made to the Kiwanis Club of New Cassel, Post Office Box 622, Westbury, NY 11590.
