The Westbury High School boys basketball team won the county championship title, as they topped Elmont 45-42 in the Nassau Class A boys basketball final at Hofstra University on Saturday, March 6. Then, for an encore, they defeated Harborfields 58-56 on a clutch basket in the final seconds of the game by Sheldon Hagigal, who had a game-high 33 points, to win the Class A Long Island title.
Against Elmont, Hagigal also led the way, scoring a team-high 13 as Westbury won its first county title since 2000. Tyrece Redd added 9 points while Lamard Herron contributed 8. Paris Abrams and Lucens Victor both had 7 points and Mikel Hooks contributed 1.
The team brought great pride to its many fans from Westbury who were in attendance to cheer them on at Hofstra. The boys impressed all with not only their outstanding athleticism, but also their humility and excellent sportsmanship.
Just when the season couldn’t get any better, Westbury defeated Harborfields to claim the Class A Long Island championship.
