A Bread Lover’s Delight

Whether it’s for fresh breads, cakes, pastries or cookies, Carle Place residents know Cardinali Bakery is the place to go. 

 

Cardinali Bakery on Westbury Avenue has been a staple in the community since 1960. And it’s come a long way over 53 years, starting as a small corner bread shop to providing wholesale breads for country clubs and expanding to include a new specialty cake shop. 

 

Cardinali Bakery is co-owned by brothers Joe and Agostino Mauro. Joe’s relationship with the store goes back to 1977, when he was working at the bakery as a side job to earn extra money during high school. What started as a side job, became full time, and Joe fell in love with the business, opening his own Italian French bakery on Maple Avenue in Westbury in 1987.  He ran the bakery from 1987 to 1995, before taking over the Cardinali’s legacy in 1996. 

 

“It gives you a good feeling that you bought something already accomplished and can keep it going,” says Joe. “Especially in today’s times, it’s not easy but it’s a good feeling.”  

Since the Mauros took over, Cardinali’s has expanded from retail, to wholesale, delivering to fine Italian restaurants, delis, pizzerias and country clubs such as Fox Hollow, and Westbury Manor.

 

The Cardinali’s difference? Quality, says Joe. 

 

“When it comes to food, people want quality,” says Joe. “The first thing you see when you sit at a restaurant is a loaf of bread, so they want to make sure it’s quality. And we thrive on quality.” 

 

Cardinali’s artisan breads are made of all natural dough, and are made in specialty ovens that come from Italy. All the breads are made fresh every day. 

 

The most recent addition to the Cardinali’s line is Creations by Cardinali, a specialty cake shop located a few steps away from their pastry shop. Creations is expected to open by the end of November. 

 

 “We’re known as a real Italian bake shop, so we made (the cakes) a different shop,” says Agostino. “So even though we have our old Italian roots, we’re also here to give you modern themes and looks for sweet sixteens and weddings and such.” 

 

At Creations by Cardinali, cakes can be custom designed for weddings, sweet 16s, communions, graduations, or any other occasion. According to Agostino, cakes make a party come alive, an idea reflected in the store’s motto, “We all have a story to tell, let our cakes tell yours.” 

 

But the Mauro’s are more than just baked good experts. A few years ago, one of their customers was La Bottega, a franchise wine bar and restaurant in Garden City. Joe liked the restaurant so much, he decided to open his own right next door to Cardinali’s Bakery. With a pastry shop, restaurant, and cake shop on the way, the Maruos have been able to stay one step ahead of the competition, offering customers baked goods  and good food for every and any any occasion. 

 

“You have to diversify in today’s market,” Joe says. “You can’t stand still. If you stand still the competition eats you alive. We just try to move with the times and do the best we can.” 

 

And Agostino says that more than a business, owning the bakeries is a passion. 

 

“In passion comes success, and with our passion we’ve been very successful. When I go to work, the last thing I worry about is the clock, I spend every minute here making people happy and putting out a great product,” says Agostino.
