Levittown resident and former Carle Place store employee Wilson Lopez, 24, was arrested Thursday, Dec. 15 at his home at 12:30 a.m. for unlawful surveillance, according to Nassau County Detective Lieutenant Raymond Cote.
Cote said an employee at Elements Lighting, located at 227 Glen Cove Road, discovered a small USB video camera in the bathroom and brought the device to the attention of the store manager. Once the manager plugged the device into a computer, video revealed Lopez’s face operating the camera.
“Mr. Lopez had done this because he was attracted to one of the other co-workers and it was his intent to record some surveillance of her using the bathroom,” said Cote.
Cote said that when the store manager approached Lopez, he admitted to placing it in the bathroom and was arrested without incident. Cote noted Lopez had one prior arrest for driving while intoxicated.
During the press conference, Cote elaborated on the video camera, which resembled a regular USB flash drive.
“He surfed the web, probably in areas you wouldn’t normally look, and bought it on eBay for $20 bucks,” said Cote, adding that the device couldn’t transmit video but was capable of recording up to an hour of digital video.
Lopez had worked at Elements Lighting for around a year before the arrest, Cote noted, and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Dec. 15.
