The Westbury Board of Education would like to inform residents that a revised budget for the 2011-2012 school year will be put up for a public vote on Tuesday, June 21, 2011.
After the district’s first budget was defeated by 41 votes on May 17, board members and district administrators worked together to revise the original budget. Through careful evaluation and revisions, the district has reduced the budget by $692,624, which translates into a 3.17 percent tax levy for the 2011-12 school year.
This decrease is due in large part to salary concessions by all district employees: the Westbury Teachers Association took a deferred increase for the next three years, which will save the district $3.6 million over the next 3 years; central administrators, including the superintendent and assistant superintendents, have offered to forego their contractual raises for 2011-12; and building administrators and directors have agreed to a salary freeze for the next school year in addition to deferring their STEP increases until January 2012.
Further, the district will allocate an additional $935,000 of appropriated fund balance towards the budget, and some positions left vacant by retirements will not be filled.
If the reduced budget is not passed, the district must, by law, adopt a contingency budget. Under a contingency budget, school districts must charge building usage fees for all community organizations, and schools cannot purchase any new equipment.
“Our teachers and administrators have offered concessions in order to sustain student programs and services within the district, while reducing the overall budget. I sincerely hope that this revised budget will be more favorable to our voters,” said Superintendent Dr. Constance Clark-Snead.
The Westbury School District Budget Revote will take place on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. at Drexel Avenue School, Dryden Street School, Park Avenue School and Westbury Middle School.
