How to get larger, better flowers and a more shapely dahlia plant will be the topic of the 7 p.m. Dahlias 101 class. The 8 p.m. meeting will focus on harmful insects that are attracted to dahlias and how to deal with them effectively. To uninsured women over the age of 40 provided by the Cancer Screening Partnership at Nassau University Medical Center. Free take-home test for colorectal cancer for women 50 and over and their partners will be distributed. These services are offered in conjunction with NUMC, North Shore/LIJ Health System, Planned Parenthood, South Nassau Communities Hospital and others, starting at 8:30 a.m. at NUMC, 2201 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow. The Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 W. Old Country Rd., Hicksville, invites children to go to the edge this summer at Camp E.D.G.E. (Experience and Discover God Everywhere). Each class includes a lesson on wildlife biology, a hike and other educational activities. 4 p.m. For ages 6 to 12. Registration required. $10 per class. The fee covers the student and one accompanying adult.
•July 10: Bat Walk. A Fordham University bat biologist will give a short lecture and lead a walk through the gardens to listen and look for bats. 6:30 p.m. Free with admission.

•July 10-12: Going Green Recycling Weekend. Still have plastic pots, flats and packs laying around from your spring and summer planting? Bring them all in to Hicks Nurseries during store hours and the nursery will recycle them. In addition, each family will receive a $10 coupon to be used toward purchases that day (of $60 or more). No need to sort the plastic; the nursery will do it. This service is open only to retail customers.
•Artist Harriet Carotenuto teaches how to paint landscapes and flowers and plants using watercolors. The landscape class begins July 11 and meets for five consecutive Saturdays through Aug. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced. The cost is $200 (late registration after July 12 is $225). Supplies are not included in the fee. A special five-day botanical art program will be held from July 20 through July 24. The class for beginners meets from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the intermediate and advanced class runs from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The fee is $200 (late registration after July 28 is $225). Supplies are not included in the fee. All classes are held in The Henry Hicks Learning Center at the nursery and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines Association will host its third Annual Golf Outing at Eisenhower Park on Aug. 3 to raise funds for the support of local Marine Reservists and their families. Play will take place on the Red and White Courses with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Check in begins at 10 a.m., followed by a barbeque lunch. Play will be followed by a buffet dinner at the Carltun. Proceeds will help the nonprofit organization provide comfort and support to family members of deployed Marines; care packages for those on the frontlines of the War on Terror; and if need be, funds will be used to assist wounded Marines or provide for the survivors of any killed in the line of duty.
