A retirement party in honor of Ernest Strada was held April 16 at the Westbury Manor. At this time, residents, business owners, community leaders and elected officials from the village and across Nassau County and New York State gathered to celebrate "Mr. Westbury."

A family affair: Members of the Strada family gathered to celebrate Ernest Strada's years of service to the Village of Westbury.

A lifelong resident and self-proclaimed public servant, Strada has spent more than two-thirds of his life serving Westbury and his involvement with the village spans almost half of its 75-year history. Earlier this year, Strada announced that, after a career in village government, including 28 years as mayor, he would not seek re-election to an eighth consecutive term. His retirement was effective April 6.

At last Thursday's celebratory dinner, Strada was presented with citations and plaques as well as gifts and well wishes. Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi presented Strada with a citation while North Hempstead Town Councilman Robert Troiano paid special recognition to Strada's wife, Maryann. Many of the local community groups also paid special recognition to the former mayor as did the Westbury Fire Department, St. Brigid's community and mayors from across the Island.

Strada was also bestowed with two very special honors: Nassau County Legislators Roger Corbin and Richard Nicolello announced that Post Avenue - between Old Country Road and Rockland Avenue - has been designated "Mayor Ernest Strada Way" in honor of the former mayor's "extensive public service to the residents in the Village of Westbury." Additionally, the village board announced that the piazza, located at the corner of Westbury and Post Avenues, will be officially renamed "Ernest Strada Piazza" in honor of the man whose dream for a village park, complete with a water feature, came to fruition.
