After an undefeated 2008 season, the Mineola Chiefs 6th Grade Boys Lacrosse Team went on the road for their first 2009 season game and beat the Wantagh Warriors 5-3 in front of a crowd of screaming fans.
It was a rough and physical game.
Midfielders Thomas O'Connell, James Gerstner, Peter McCormack, Brian Smith and Kyle Dunleavy passed the ball around the field and out hustled Wantagh 39-17 on ground balls. Chiefs attackmen Chris Lockwood, Mike Patalano and Dominic Paggi kept the heat on the Warriors goalie throughout the day. The Chiefs' defense, led by Gavin Dowd and Jake Connors, was all over the place causing havoc while goalie John Clancy made stellar saves in front of the cage. O'Connell and Dunleavy combined to win 9 of the 10 face-offs.
The entire Mineola 6th grade team and coaching staff, including Mineola High School Coaches Mike Perro, Chris Grimm and Brian Grodotzke, showed outstanding character and sportsmanship. All the boys played and participated in the victory, including Alex Taveira, Gerard Boniello, Trifon Boniello, Tom O'Dwyer, Teddy Capsis, Mark Sarnell, Anthony Sarno, Chris Limazopoulos, Chris Berger, Eric Pacher, Jacob Correia and Kyle Leinhart.
