Keeping our children safe must remain our top priority.
In the past year residents have noticed an increase in unsupervised children selling items from large storage containers door-to-door. Usually they have identification paperwork indicating that they are from an organization.
A man from the New York Youth Club of Smithtown was arrested this past week, charged with six counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. This individual recruited children from Hempstead, Westbury and Freeport, ranging from 9-14, through word of mouth and fliers. The children were instructed to sell items in the West Hempstead and Franklin Square areas in order to solicit funds for the organization.
We support the efforts of the Nassau County Police Department to make arrests of this nature. This will ultimately keep our children out of harm's way. Please refrain from supporting an organization that takes advantage of children. Instead, call your local precinct.
And to those organizations who engage in this method of soliciting funds, we urge you to call the local precincts to ascertain any laws or regulations that might govern your activities. Never send a child unsupervised door-to-door.
This exploitation puts our children at risk. We are counting on you to be proactive.
