Created by local mothers for local mothers, the Midshore Mothers' Center, Inc. in Wantagh is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization that offers a variety of programs and services for both mothers and their children.

Their mission is simple: helping mothers.

"We believe that both mother and child need to be nurtured at the _center," the website states.

Elizabeth Semer of Bellmore is in charge of publicity for the Center. A mother of two herself, Semer added that their mission is "to provide a forum for woman to discuss their needs as mothers, reduce the isolation often encountered while parenting in today's world, discuss postpartum issues, and to provide support and information."

Patsy Turinni, a social worker, founded the center in 1970.

"She found that there was many similarities in her clients concerning their lack of confidence in their parenting skills," Semer explained. "She began a research study with 40 woman and they met regularly to discuss issues they were experiencing and possible solutions. The woman felt a sense of empowerment and wanted to continue.

After years of operating under the Massapequa Mothers Center, the organization incorporated in 2004 and changed names to the Midshore Mothers' Center. Today the center has 120 members.

"They had discussion groups for mothers in the community as a way to foster personal empowerment, share experiences and gain insight into care giving and personal growth as well as many other topics such as marriage, friendship and different stages of child development," Semer said.

Midshore Mothers' Center, which is part of the National Association of Mothers Centers, offers discussion groups and clubs, Mommy & Me and separation classes, weekend trips, girl's night outings, a bowling league, a book club, yoga classes summer program and day care.

Yearly dues are $40, however services are available to nonmembers as well for nominal fees.

The Second Hand Treasures Sale will be on Friday, Feb. 13-14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Brand new and gently used toys, books, clothing in every size, maternity wear, housewares, shoes and much more are available for purchase.

Call 679-4641 to RSVP or for more information on any of these events.
