Westbury High School will hold its annual Reid-Robeson Basketball Classic on Saturday, Feb. 7. This year's event with mark Westbury's 24th annual mid-winter basketball classic.
Westbury High School basketball coach and administrator Martin S. Reid founded what was originally the Paul Robeson Classic, which had its first edition in 1986. It has carried Reid's name since 1994, the year after the coach passed away.
Each year, one player from each team is honored before each game for exemplifying the scholar-athlete ideal lived by both namesakes - performer Paul Robeson and coach/educator Reid.
The event starts at noon with the Westbury Varsity Girls hosting Manhasset. Then, at 2 p.m., it's junior varsity boys action when Westbury takes on Long Beach. In the varsity boys nightcap, scheduled at 4 p.m., Westbury and Long Beach are once again matched up.
Admission to the games is $5 with the money going toward student scholarships. For more information about the Reid-Robeson Classic, call 876-5075.
