Westbury High School's Boys Varsity Basketball Team defeated previously unbeaten and number one ranked Chaminade High School to win the Chaminade Christmas Tournament.
Four teams - Manhasset, Half Hollow Hills, Chaminade and Westbury -were battling for the championship. In the first round Westbury defeated Manhasset 67 to 46. The Green Dragons broke open a close game when they exploded for a 25 to 12 fourth quarter. Paris Abrams hit all four of his 3 pointers in the fourth quarter and Josh Core added 13 points and 8 rebounds.
In the championship game Westbury needed to play its best basketball to defeat the number one ranked team on Long Island and they did. The Dragons steadily pulled away with their quickness and depth and consistently came up with clutch baskets every time Chaminade mounted a rally. Westbury led 36 to 28 at the half. In the third quarter a three pointer by Lamard Herron and a put back by Josh Core increased the lead to 16 points but Chaminade answered with a big run to cut the lead to 4 points with 5 minutes remaining. Brian Hailey hit a beautiful spinning move in the post to increase the lead to 6 but Chaminade fought back again cutting the lead to 2 with just two minutes left.
Westbury kept their composure and a steal by Tyrece Redd who converted the basket and was fouled pushed the lead back up to 6. A Chaminade three pointer cut the lead to 3 with under 30 seconds to play but two free throws by Lamard Herron iced the game. Herron finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals and was named the tournament MVP. Paris Abrams added 13 points and was named all tournament.
"This is the first time we have beaten Chaminade in my 20 years at Westbury," said Coach Dave Graff.
