On Nov. 23, the Long Island Shidokan Association conducted a karate tournament at the Westbury Village Sports Center on Post Avenue. The Long Island ShidoKan Association is made up of three dojos on Long Island - the Westbury Okinawan Karate dojo, Budokan Karate in Hicksville and Budokan of Little Neck. Over 60 students from these three dojos competed against each other. Multi evel blackbelts to 4-year-old white belts participated before an audience of family, friends and other visitors.
Many of Westbury's students took home first, second and third place trophies in their respective divisions. Others who competed and were not that successful took home participation trophies as well. Westbury dojo students who competed and won trophies include:

The Westbury Okinawan Karate School (dojo) works with the Westbury Recreation Department to bring a traditional Okinawan style of karate to the village. The program, coordinated by Sensei John Power - 4th Dan, is in its fourth year. The Westbury School runs a continuous program that eventually leads to blackbelt and beyond. The school accepts children 6 years of age up to adults.
