Assemblyman Rob Walker (R, C, I, WF - Hicksville) released the following statement regarding the special session of the Assembly called by Governor David Paterson earlier this week to address the current state budget deficit:
"I am pleased that the Legislature stood up to the governor's proposed budget cuts to schools and health care. Unfortunately, the Assembly wasted an entire day and countless taxpayer dollars to hold a special session that resulted in absolutely no dialogue or action on budget cuts.
"My colleagues and I came to Albany prepared to make the tough but necessary spending reductions to this year's budget, in order to keep New York from falling further into debt as a result of decreased revenues. However, because the Assembly Majority showed no interest in cutting the budget, we were unable to do so at this time.
"Despite the fact that it is obvious to any New Yorker that our state is going through tough economic times, there has been a lack of dialogue between the governor and legislative leaders. If the situation is left unresolved of the Assembly and Senate in which, the only losers are the New York taxpayers. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos provided one a positive solution for Long Island when he suggested increased economic development at Belmont was as a way to bring back quality jobs and revenue to New York, in addition to reducing spending at the state level.
"I look forward to returning to Albany soon to start serious budget reduction and getting back to the work of New Yorkers who can no longer afford inaction by their elected officials in Albany."
