Legislator Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) wants all our children to be safe and have fun trick-or-treating this year. Legislator Corbin has the following precautions for parents to follow that will help ensure the well-being of our community's youngsters:
• Children should not go out during daylight hours unless accompanied by a responsible adult
• Children should not be allowed to eat any candy until an adult is able to properly inspect it
• Children should carry a flashlight, glow stick or have reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible
• Older children who are able to go out in a group should plan a safe route with parents and set a specific time for their return home; children should be reminded not to cut through back alleys or fields
• A child should never go into the home or car of a stranger
• Yards and sidewalks should be clear of obstacles or decorations that are difficult to see in the dark
• A child's costume shouldn't cause him or her to trip - trick-or-treaters need to see and be seen.
• If children must walk on a road, they should walk facing traffic.
Also, due to possible contamination with melamine, the Food and Drug Administration has recalled White Rabbit Candy. This candy can be identified by the picture of a white rabbit on the front of the package.
