The usually much anticipated homecoming exercise that is celebrated annually in the Westbury School District will be observed on the grounds of the high school, on Saturday, Sept. 27.
This has been a tradition in the school district for over 40 years, but this year will be characterized by two special features; one being that homecoming is usually held in mid-October, the other being that the high school is celebrating its 50th birthday this month, having been opened for business at its current location on Sept. 3, 1958. Alums are expected to be out in full force to celebrate the occasion, and since the weather should be considerably milder at this time of the year, a good time is expected to be had by all in attendance.
Although the parade will not begin until noon, the all-day activities will actually kick off at 8 a.m. with the traditional pancake breakfast that is sponsored by the high school PTSA. This is a family affair; bring the entire family to enjoy hot off the griddle pancakes in quantities of all-you-can-eat! Eggs, bacon or sausage and fresh juice are also included on the menu; all this for a mere $6. Fresh fruits, tea, coffee and assorted confectionery will also be on sale.
The parade will include participation by all the schools that comprise the Westbury Union Free School District, as well as civic associations, and will start promptly at noon from the starting point at St. Brigid's Church. The route will be along Post Avenue to Westbury High School football field. This year's theme is "Westbury Goes Crazy for Comics," and floats and marquees will depict this flavor. The football game between Westbury and Island Trees will begin at 1:30 p.m. Admission to the game is $3.
At halftime the court will be introduced, and there will be a special salute to the "new" high school on the occasion of its 50th birthday.
Please join us in this auspicious occasion.
