The CSEA Local 830, Nassau County's largest public service union with 10,000 members, held its Third Annual Scholarship Classic Golf Outing on July 21 at the Eisenhower Park Red Course. Over 120 golfers hit the course on a beautiful summer day preceded by a full breakfast and followed by dinner at Savannah's in East Meadow.

The proceeds from the event went to two great causes. Four $600 scholarships were awarded to students whose parent or guardian is a CSEA member. Also, for the second straight year, underprivileged children from Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) left Aug. 4 for a trip to the Paul Newman Ranch in upstate New York, courtesy of CSEA.

The four scholarship winners were Kristin Behr, Kristyn Ortiz, Morgan Rubanow and Megan Fritz.

Kristin Behr, a 2008 graduate of Kellenberg High School, will be attending St. John's University in the fall. She was a member of the varsity equestrian team, and volunteers at HorseAbility in Melville, helping children with physical and emotional disabilities ride horses in a therapeutic program. Her career goals include continuing to work with disabled children.

Kristyn Ortiz is a textile design major at the New York City Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where she maintained a 3.74 GPA through her freshman year. Ortiz participates in FIT's leadership conferences as a representative and is campaigning for a seat on the student government. She plans to be a successful fashion designer.

Morgan Rubanow, a 2008 graduate of Hicksville High School, will be attending Stonehill College in the fall. She was a member of the varsity basketball team since ninth grade and the varsity soccer team since 10th grade, receiving All-County honors this past season. Rubanow had a GPA of 98.64, was vice president of the Key Club and a member of the National, Spanish and Math Honor Societies as well as involved in various other extracurricular activities. She would like to pursue a career helping animals.

Megan Fritz will be attending Adelphi University this fall. She was involved in the Future Business Leaders of America, takes part in the annual Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach, participates in Holiday Food Drives and was captain of the varsity cheerleading team this past season. She plans to pursue a teaching career.

CSEA would like to congratulate all four much deserved winners. "I am so pleased that our Golf Committee has once again chosen four outstanding winners for our scholarships," CSEA Local 830 President Jerry Laricchiuta said. "The credentials of these four young women are truly amazing and I am honored to present them with these awards."
