Obituaries

Harold Neal Sr., a resident of New Cassel for over 40 years, passed away on July 17, 2008 at the Henry County Medical Center in Stockbridge, GA. He will be remembered as the owner of Ran Home Improvement and the proprietor of the Superior Sports Club. He was involved in many community groups in New Cassel. He was the president of the Unified Civic Association of New Cassel for over seven years, a member of the New Cassel Health Advisory and the Westbury Improvement Corp., just to name a few.

He is survived by the love of his life, his loving wife L. Tracey Neal, two sons, RayVaughn Torrez' Neal and Airman Harold Neal Jr. (wife Erica), two grandsons of New Cassel, AaMauri Braxton Neal and RayVaughn Ali Neal.

Harold was laid to rest on July 26 in Georgia. A memorial service will be held in New York, Aug. 2, 2008 at noon at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 243 Fredricks Ave., Roosevelt. Rev. A. Mackey Pastor. Cards of comfort may be mailed to P.O. Box 2728, McDonough, GA, 30253.

Edwin Alva Tonyes Sr., of Southold, died at VNS Hospice House in East Northport on July 22, 2008. He was 81 years old. Mr. Tonyes was born in New York City on Feb. 8, 1927 to Henry J. and Mary Ann (nee Schmidt) Tonyes. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy and participated in the Normandy Invasion. Ed was an insurance broker and former resident of Carle Place where he was active in the Carle Place Fire Department and American Legion Post #1718.

He is survived by his wife Margaret A. Tonyes (nee Catanzaro); five children, William Townsend of North Carolina, Mary DeGrocco of West Babylon, Edwin A. Tonyes Jr. of Greenport, James Tonyes of Greenport and Donald Tonyes of Greenport; three siblings, Genevieve Sturtevant of Main, Henry J. Tonyes of Garrrison, NY, and William Tonyes of Happauge; and six grandchildren.

The family received friends on July 24 at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home, Southold, where vigil prayers were recited by Rev. Canon Edward A. Wisbauer Jr. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 25 at St. Patrick's RC Church, Southold, by Rev. Fr. Joseph DeGrocco. Interment with U.S. Navy honors was in Calverton National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
