Stu and Susan Goldman of Old Westbury have little difficulty rationalizing the time and effort they're expending on an Aug. 11 Richmond Community Services Foundation golf tournament that will raise funds to support services for people with significant intellectual and physical disabilities.

"I've been able to put my head down on my pillow and sleep each night for the past 26 years knowing my daughter is getting the excellent round-the-clock care she needs at Richmond Community Services," said Susan, a pre-K teacher at the Buckley Country Day School in Roslyn.

Stu added, "Richmond is where our daughter will live for the rest of her life. It deserves our support so that it can continue to meet her needs and those of hundreds of other people with similar levels of disability."

Hence their efforts to attract golfers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters of Richmond's Fifth Annual Golf Tournament, which will begin at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at Old Westbury Golf & Country Club in Old Westbury.

"We're hoping to attract more than 100 golfers from Long Island, Westchester and New York City and raise at least $100,000 to support under-funded, unfunded and innovative Richmond pilot programs for children and adults with severe developmental disabilities," said Stu, who serves with John Cory of Fort Lee, NJ, as a co-chair of a 10-member golf committee and is assistant basketball coach at Manhasset High School. "The event is an opportunity to play at one of the top five courses in the metropolitan area and enjoy the satisfaction of helping individuals with really special needs."

The Goldmans became involved with Richmond in 1982 when they placed their now 28-year-old daughter Paley, who is unable to verbally communicate or move without assistance, in its Northern Yonkers residence for children and adults with severe disabilities. Since then, Susan has served on Richmond's Board of Directors and recently agreed to be on its new Foundation Board. And Stu, who owns New York City-based ATHCO, Inc., an importer of active wear under the names Wilson and Smith's Workwear, has been a major force behind the success of its golf tournaments and annual Richmond Journal, which have raised more than $1.3 million since 2004.

Additionally, the Goldman's oldest daughter, Jessica, and her husband Jonathan, are donors and recruiters for the golf tournament, while their youngest child, Michael, is becoming active now that he has completed college.

"Richmond has helped our entire family, not just Paley, so we all want to give back," said Susan. "Stu and I are especially grateful because most parents of a child with a disability often have agonizing doubts about the choices they made in seeking help. Seeing the level of care Paley receives makes us feel very good about our decision to collaborate with Richmond in addressing her many quality of life needs."

"People shouldn't have to face such problems, but many do. So it's a great comfort to know your child is being attentively cared for," said Stu.

The cost per player for the golf tournament, which covers lunch, cocktail reception, dinner and a silent and live auction conducted by comedian Freddie Roman, in addition to the golf, is $650.
