The Carle Place High School Varsity Softball Team won the 2008 Nassau County Class B High School Softball Championship marking the second consecutive year the Lady Frogs have taken home the title. Additionally, it was the team's sixth County Title in 12 years as a varsity program. The Lady Frogs repeated a Nassau County Class B Championship.
The team stepped up to the plate during post-season play defeating Wheatley 10-1 in the Class B Semifinals, then Oyster Bay 6-1 and 3-2 in the three-game county finals before moving on to advance to the New York State Regional, Long Island Championship game June 11 against Hampton Bays High School. The girls played Hampton Bays scoreless for 10 innings but unfortunately the Lady Frogs lost in a marathon battle in the bottom of the 10th inning by a score of 1-0.
This year's roster was comprised of 13 players: Captain Melanie Rizzo (All-County), Captain Jaclyn Skelton (All-Division), Captain Mallory Mitchell (All-County), Andrea Veigas, Tara Moore, Joanne Barilla, Jessica Bruckner, Jessica Lewis (All-Division), Dana McLaughlin, Tori Hytell, Ashley Cole (All-Conference) and Leanne Iannucci (All-Conference).
Impressive numbers by pitcher Rizzo, who gave up six hits, had 11 strikeouts and only one walk. She went 5-9 for the series with four singles, a double and five RBIs. Rizzo was honored as Nassau County's Class B MVP. Additionally, Skelton went 7-10 and had two RBIs; Mitchell went 4-9 with three RBIs; and Cole went 4-11 with two RBIs.
Like all successful varsity programs, Carle Place continues to stress the importance of fundamentals on the lower levels (Little League, middle school and junior varsity). With continuous support from the Carle Place administration, community and parents the program would not be as successful. Coach and Carle Place High School Athletic Director Chris Ceruti attributes the team's continued success to their commitment, passion for the game and believing in themselves.
