The Mineola PAL Chiefs Fifth Grade Boys Lacrosse Team played at home this past Sunday and beat the never before beaten Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks 7-4 in front of a crowd of loud screaming fans at Hampton Stadium. It was again a battle of two undefeated teams. The Seahawks were a talented team, but they weren't ready for the heat the Chiefs were about to bring. Both teams had speed and were able to pass the ball, but the Chiefs were much more physical, hammering the Seahawks all over the field.
Offensively, the Chiefs dominated possession by winning face offs. Face-off specialist Thomas O'Connell won 12 of 15 face-offs while speedsters Peter McCormack and Mikey Elefonte made it difficult for the Seahawks to keep pace. Midfielders Brian Smith, Teddy Capsis and James Gerstner battled the Seahawks for ground balls. Attackmen Chris Lockwood, Dominick Paggi, Daniel Zabarauskas and William Berger worked the Seahawks defense and kept heat on the crease.
In the second half, trailing 4-3, the Chiefs exploded for four goals by four different players to secure the upset win 7-4. Defensemen Jake Conners, Chris Asam, Jacob Correia and Gavin Dowd had settled down in the second half and with the outstanding goaltending of Goalie John Clancy, shutout the Seahawks for the rest of the game.
With this most recent win, the Chiefs continue an undefeated season with a record of 6-0-1.
