It was a true fairy tale for the Lady Green Dragons, Westbury's Girls' Varsity Basketball Team, which ended its season with an unexpected run to the Nassau Class A Championship game March 1. Led by team members Shemique Hooks and Philana Nedd, the team accomplished the unthinkable, winning 14 games and making it to the semifinals and championship games for the first time.
Seeded 10th during the playoffs, the Lady Green Dragons had an impressive season defeating Southside (No. 7) 52-46, Manhasset (No. 2) 52-37 and Wantagh (No. 3) 60-59, before losing to Floral Park (No.1) 44-43 in the championship game. Hooks scored 32 points for Westbury, which led the game through the third quarter. After a successful comeback by Floral Park, Westbury took its final lead with a pair of free throw shots from Nedd, before Floral Park scored their winning shot.
Hooks will be honored with Nassau County's Player of the Week award for her remarkable performance at the championship game with 32 points, including 8 three-pointers.
With an overall team three-pointer total of close to 100, Westbury's girls' varsity basketball team has shown their determination. Coach Dennis Fanning is extremely proud of the team's success. "The young women have worked really hard this season and have dedicated themselves to the game," said Fanning. "Making it to the playoffs was a major accomplishment; we are looking forward to next season."
